In Crete you are best to avoid not only Malia...but Hersonissos as well...as these are both party resorts for the 18 - 30 type tourists.......However there are lots of places that tick all your boxes in Crete and not only in the West of the island either, in fact one of the most chilled out places that I have been to in Crete is the very far north east of the island. Chania has one of the most spectacular old town centres in Crete, with plenty of bars and restaurants, amazing old/ancient buildings, so charming. The 2-BR accommodations are really spacious, hosting up to 6 people, again with a lovely view. I arrived there late in the morning with the bus (an easy trip from Chania) and the main streets were deserted. The public bus transportation runs pretty much always on time too which makes it easy to organise your plans. My suggestion would be to have a look at some internet sites or some guide books, decide on what in Crete you want to visit, and dont forget Crete is a huge island so you dont want to be based in the wrong area :-) And hours away from all the places that you want to visit. I would personaly stay in Fira for 5 days. The view is the best and location is perfect. It has a nice local beach too, on a short walk from the town centre. I love the night scene there. There is a great long beach in the small bay with the wind coming up after lunch. I go every other year with my daughter to Loutro, since she was 7, she’s 17 now..we spend a couple of days in Chania and then charge down to Loutro on the bus for the swimming and beach. Keep in mind that from both locations you would require a 1.5-2 hours trip to go to Knossos (closer to Heraklion, which I would not suggest as a place to stay for 3 nights) I would probably stay in 2 places, to see and explore most of Crete.
